looks like one of my clients will be needing to make some of their data available on more than one computer. In this case a desktop and a laptop.
Transparency will be important here since the user has a lot on their plate and doesnt need or want a lot of extra steps to remember.
I will begin documenting the steps and products I use during the transition. Its one thing to make your data go homeless, its another to do it for someone else.

Different Data Types
Ok, so I figure there are 6 types of data that you want to make mobile.
1. Schedules
2. contacts
3. tasks
4. invoicing
5. actual files (personal or client related)
6. ephemeral data (bookmarks, login information for websites, etc.)
The first 3 are easy. All you need to do is figure out the extent of mobility you need.
1. Manage from a computer and carry it around with you on a device (Palm, Blackberry, etc,).
2. Manage from a computer and have access to the data via alternate methods of access (apps on a flash drive, online)
3. Manage and access your data from anywhere and on any computer or device.
The other 3 require more thinking as to how you will access them and to what level. I will be going over the options I have used and my personal opinions about each.
Until next time...
